As we all know the financial crisis has reached well out of the United States and one of the hardest hit European countries has been Spain. Like most of Europe, Spain has a socialist government but under these hard times the government has had to make huge cuts to public programs. With the people of Spain still pay huge taxes, but getting less in return, there have been a rise in protests across the country.
Last week Tess, Ruth and I went to go check out one that was happening in Granada. Here is a video I took of the demonstration.
Here is an article (in Spanish) about the demonstration which also took place in 80 cities across Spain on the same day.
The group who put together the demonstrations is called Marea Ciudadana who describe themselves as a group of "various
professional sectors who fight for the rights of working people, for the
public goods and services, and against harmful and antisocial policy of
ruling elites who suffer". It was very peaceful with lots of people
there with their families, singing, and playing music!
